How I landed a job with Alex Hormozi at 19

"Is this Jay?"
I didn’t recognize the voice on the other end.
I was sitting on my college dorm bed, half-working on something when my phone buzzed from a number I didn't know.
"Uh, yeah, who's this?"
It was the Director of Media at Acquisition.com, the advisory and investment firm founded by Alex and Leila Hormozi.
I don't remember everything he said after that. Something about a copywriter role, something about joining the team. What I do remember is my brain going numb.
I’d been watching Alex's business YouTube videos since I was a sophomore in high school. I remember sitting in the back of class with one AirPod in, my head turned ever so slightly so my teacher wouldn't notice, listening to his podcast while pretending to pay attention.
I'd imagined working with them the way some kids imagine playing in the NBA. And now they were on the phone, asking me to come to Las Vegas.
I told them I was interested but needed to think about it. I hung up.
I sat there on my loft bed, my legs dangling off the edge, staring at the wall of my tiny dorm room while my brain tried to catch up to what had just happened.
Drop out of college. Move to Vegas. Join the team.
I wanted to say yes, but there was a problem…
Saying yes meant shutting down my marketing agency and telling over half a dozen clients that I was leaving. It meant moving across the country to a city where I knew no one, to live alone for the first time in my life.
Most importantly, it meant telling my twin brother Max that the apartment we'd signed together for the following year, the one we'd been looking forward to since the start of college, wasn't going to happen.
I could feel the weight of the decision on my chest.
What should I do?
…
Spoiler alert: I said yes.
I dropped out, moved to Vegas, and 6 months later I was helping launch Alex's book $100M Money Models, which went on to set a Guinness World Record as the fastest-selling nonfiction book ever.

I built my entire career on this one principle: the fastest way to get what you want is to help someone who has it.
And I don’t mean that in a weird cringey way. I mean seeking out the people who are the best at your craft and learning from them.
If you've ever wondered…
• How to get into rooms with the people you admire
• How to work behind the scenes with your favorite entrepreneur or creator
• Or how to build a powerful network from scratch
I wrote Work With The Best to show you how.
