How to meet rich & powerful people

Jay Yang··2 min read

Wanna know how to get on the radar of rich and powerful people?

Post upwards.

Lemme explain:

When most people think about creating content, they think about giving advice to people who are a few steps behind them (how-to playbooks, frameworks, and templates). And that's not a bad approach if you're trying to build an audience.

But if you're creating content to build a network and get in front of specific people, you have to also post upwards. You have to post for the people you admire, not just the people who admire you.

Instead of only teaching your own frameworks, you find your target and curate, summarize, and synthesize their ideas.

Here’s an example:

When I synthesized Shaan Puri's ideas and tagged him in the post, I increased my visibility to him and showed that I'm a like-minded person who thinks deeply about the same problems he does.

About 2 years later, when Shaan was hiring, he thought of me. Crazy how this works, right?

Anytime you consume something, whether that's a book, a newsletter, or a podcast… summarize what you've learned, share some of your personal perspective, and post it.

This is just one of the many “career hacks” tactics I share in my newest book Work With The Best.

What’s it about, you ask?

Great question.

It’s basically the book I wish I had when I was starting out trying to “get in” with the people I admired.

It’s short. Easy to read. And most importantly… actionable!

Here’s what an early beta reader had to say:

“This gave me goosebumps. Brother - it’s fantastic. This book is going to change lives in a big way. Every time I have logged into this Google Doc to read, you’ve been in here editing. It’s been a pleasure to see you be so obsessed.” – Stetson Stallworth (Media Strategist)

I’ve never poured so much of my soul into a product like I have into this book.

Give it a read, I promise you won’t regret it: LINK

Ps. Writing online changed my life (obviously).

So I’m putting together a 30-day LinkedIn writing challenge where I’m going to walk you through frameworks like “writing upward” and write 30 posts with you live.

By the end of the challenge, you'll have:

  • 30 posts published.

  • A lean writing system you can run on your own.

  • A network of other people learning to do the same.

Sound interesting? You can sign up for the waiting list here.
